“Where’s your shoes? Here’s your lunchbox. Did you pack your books? Don’t miss the bus.”
“What if I don’t make friends? Do I have to go? I don’t want peanut butter and jelly.”
There’s plenty of anxiety to go around at the start of the new school year, for both you and your sweet darlings. How can you reduce the stress and brighten the faces of your little ones? The answer is in being proactive.
1) Be Prepared! Take the time to visit the new environment before their first day if you can. Introduction to the classroom and teacher will go a long way to reduce stress of the unknown on that first day.
2) Be Confident! If you’re enthusiastic and excited about the new experience, your child will be too.
3) Build Daily Routines. Have your young one help with the building of lunch, laying out school clothing, and packing their backpack. A week prior to start of school begin going to bed early to match the new schedule.
4) Start the night before. Those items that can be taken care of the evening before reduce the stress of remembering and chasing down items as time is short in the morning.
5) Always say Goodbye. Don’t get so caught up in the fast rush while their getting out of the car that you forget to say “goodbye and I’ll see you after school”. This helps your child wrap their school day with your goodbye smile and the knowledge they’ll see it again soon.
6) Photos are your friend… and theirs. Put a family photo in their bag for them, so they have your loving familiar faces always nearby should a little extra smile be needed.
A little extra care is needed to help your child transition into their new routine. Be supportive, helpful, and kind and make every effort to simplify the routine and you’ll help knock out the stress of this unfamiliar new experience.
