About Marietta, Georgia

The City of Marietta was named one of ten Georgia "Cities of Excellence," recognized as one of the state's "best managed and most livable cities." Marietta was judged by a 12-member panel on 14 separate grading sections on issues such as administration, citizen participation, community and economic development, cultural arts, education, fiscal management, infrastructure, intergovernmental cooperation, planning, public safety, recreation and leisure services, social services and technology.

Highlights of Marietta's nomination include:
Technologically advanced. Other cities and agencies come to observe and learn from Marietta. Its cutting-edge technology continues to attract big business.
Government and fiscal stability. In the first seven months of 2001, all three national investment agencies have upgraded the City's already high financial rating. Marietta has the lowest millage rates in the metro Atlanta area and has reduced taxes for the last six years!

Citizen-oriented government. Our innovative M-Star program has attracted international representatives from as far away as Israel. The only such program in Georgia, and one of only three in the nation! Marietta's successful Citizens' Government Academy has received national acclaim and many cities are duplicating Marietta's program. In fact, our program has been so successful that we have doubled several classes and have created a waiting list every year! The success of this program is further demonstrated by the fact that many of the graduates go on to volunteer for various boards and committees in the city.

Preserved history. A city of only 22 square miles, Marietta boasts five historic districts and approximately 375 buildings listed on the National Historic Register. Marietta is one of only a few cities with a Confederate cemetery and is proud to have the only National Cemetery in metro Atlanta. Leader in community partnerships. Marietta recognizes the importance of cultural arts, providing support to enhance the quality of life for all Mariettans. Last, but most certainly not least, the community spirit of the citizens of Marietta make Marietta a City of Excellence.

The 12-person panel of judges were from the fields of business, media, academia and government. Included in the judging criteria were fiscal management, public safety, infrastructure, citizen participation, cultural activities and community partnerships. Numerous programs both new and ongoing were included in Marietta's application, including the Citizens' Government Academy, the M-STAR program, and the Envision Marietta study.
